Dubai Metro is speeding ahead with seven stations on the Red Line set to open on April 30 and three more opening on May 15.

10vWork at 18 stations will be completed on April 25, said the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Saturday. The authority also said new buses would be deployed to link the new Metro stations with surrounding areas.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA chairman, said:  “The consortium undertaking Dubai Metro project is set to complete work on the remaining 18 stations on the Red Line on April 25, 2010 and seven stations — Emirates, Airport Terminal 1, Al Karama, Emirates Towers, Dubai Internet City, Marina and Ibn Battuta — will be opened on April 30, 2010.

“Three other stations that will open on May 15 are GGICO, World Trade Centre and Al Qouz. The remaining eight stations on the Red Line will be opened over the next months of this year.”

Al Tayer said density of population in these areas were the basis for opening the stations.

‘‘Stations have been selected based on the extent of population density in the locality served by each station so as to provide convenient services to the inhabitants in the neighbourhood, availability of commercial activities in the area served by each station, availability of government activities in the vicinity of each station, the station’s integration with other transport modes such as buses and water transport, and the projected number of commuters at each station.”

The RTA is also introducing 28 feeder buses for the new stations. “RTA has carried out site surveys for the neighbourhood of the Dubai Metro stations opening shortly and accordingly opened up new bus routes to feed the metro stations. Twenty-eight buses are being deployed to link the metro stations with the surrounding areas and the service is set to run at 13-20 minutes headway (intervals).”
