The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved the prestigious ISO 27001 certification in Information Security Management Systems; the highest internationally accredited certification for Information Security.
The Certificate has been received by H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, from Brian Baxter, Manager of Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd (LRQA); which has carried out the assessment of RTA Information Security Systems. The Award was made in the presence of Abdullah Al Madani, CEO of RTA Corporate Technical Support Services, and Abdullah Al Bastaki, Director of RTA Information Technology, in addition to Premchand Kurup, CEO of Paramount Computer Systems Co.
Al Tayer expressed his pleasure with the achievement by the RTA of this certificate saying: “This certification is a further addition to RTA successes in Information Technology and gives an impetus for doing more IT efforts to serve the public. Achieving this certificate is a testament to the adoption by the RTA of the highest global standards of management, follow-up and improvement of Information Security Management Systems; which entails improving the performance of our IT Dep’t in raising the security awareness, improving the response to IT-related security requirements & incidents and carrying out periodical reviews of the approved policies as part of an ongoing improvement process.
“RTA has obtained this Certificate following the completion of several steps including an carrying out an initial review of the current situation and benchmarking the results against the set targets, compiling a report highlighting the existing loopholes, developing a work plan for upgrading the policies and processes implementing them in line with the approved standards, conducting an initial audit & obtaining feedback, and eventually carrying out a final assessment of all requisites of the Certificate.
“From inception, RTA assumed the responsibility of upgrading the quality of customer service and was keen on diversifying the platforms and channels of delivering such services; at the top of which was the internet. RTA developed an integrated strategy for converting and providing the online services in keeping with the vision and trends of the e-Government as part of a strategy based on speedy processing and customer centricity,” said Al Tayer.
The Roads & Transport Authority has recently obtained ISO 20000 certification for the quality standards of the IT services in place, in recognition of its efforts in applying the best practices as provided for in the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standards. Thus RTA has become only the second Government Department at the Dubai Government level, and the fifth across the UAE to obtain this certification.
RTA has bagged five key Awards at the regional level in recognition of its efforts in the IT field. It won the second position in the e-Government Award at the GCC level held in Muscat, Oman in 2009 in the category of the Best Electronically Advanced Organization at the GCC level following a fierce competition with GCC ministries and organizations.
RTA also won IT Governance Award; an annually awarded prize made by the Information Technology Governance Assurance Forum (ITGAF) for honouring and recognizing the efforts made by organizations in building & practicing processes (Maturity Level); an initial step for achieving IT Governance. The Award, which was launched by the Financial Audit Department of Dubai Government in 2006, provides a prime opportunity for motivating the IT Team and deriving clear-cut benefits to boost IT and processes.
RTA won Middle East Network Creativity Award being considered the entity that has the most direct impact on the user. The Award is awarded annually to projects, persons, vendors and service providers who adopt innovative methods in regional networking over 12 months in recognition of efforts made in setting pioneering benchmarks and increasing the reliability of the networking infrastructure across the region.
RTA also won Arab Technology Award in recognition of its efforts in the field of technological applications in the government sector through the project of paying the parking fees over the mobile phone (mParking); which enables the service users to pay their parking fees over their mobile phones without having to go to the parking machines or carry coins. Additionally, RTA clinched the Information Technology Executive of the Year 2009 Award in recognition of the excellent performance made in achieving the e-link scheme through adopting innovative linking technology application. This Award is awarded by CIO 20 Forum in 2009, in collaboration with Computer News Middle East Magazine, and Forrester Middle East.
