Motorists in Dubai have been warned again not to drive in dedicated bus and taxi lanes to avoid fines.

Dubai“We will use surveillance cameras on the roads with dedicated bus and taxi lanes to monitor private vehicles and will forward the information about offending vehicles to police to issue fines accordingly,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Al Tayer’s comments came during a coordination meeting with Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police. Senior officials from both Dubai Police and the RTA attended the meeting which discussed various issues related to improving roads and the traffic situation.

Second phase of project

The RTA launched dedicated bus and taxi lanes on a few roads in Dubai last year and is now considering launching the second phase of the project in Deira in the second half of this year. The second phase will see dedicated lanes on one kilometre of Naif Road in a sector extending from Al Musalla Road to Al Khaleej Road and one kilometre of Al Ittihad Road in the direction from Sharjah to Dubai near Al Nahda Interchange.

The RTA and the police also agreed to step up a campaign against drivers of heavy vehicles who violate road and traffic rules. It was also agreed to run joint campaigns for towing away heavy trucks and vehicles parked on hard shoulders and under bridges.
