Doha: The Managing Director and Board Member of Qatar Railways Company Engineer Abdullah Abdul Aziz Al Subaie has said that the company is currently working on the documents of its first tender for the railway and metro system in Qatar, adding that the tender is expected to be offered soon and that some preliminary designs have already been prepared.
Al Subaie, in a press statement on the sidelines of Qatar MEED Transport 2011, said the first tender is expected to be ready during the next three months and will include a tender for digging tunnels and setting up one or two key stations of the project.
He added that the total cost of the Qatar railway project will be QR130bn, and that more than 1.2 million tonnes of iron will be required for the railway project.
There will be a total of 100 stations in the project, he noted.
Al Subaie said that the work will begin with the metro so that its first phase be ready by 2021, one year before hosting the World Cup after that work will continue until 2026 to complete the project.
The Qatar Railways Company’s Managing Director urged Qatari companies to build partnerships with international firms to increase their chances and contribute to construction work of the project, and revealed that the bridge between Qatar and Bahrain will include a special railway line.
