With the hot and humid summer upon us, every effort needs to be made to ensure that those who venture outside for prolonged periods of time look after their health and well-being.
Outdoor summer regulations take effect next week.
In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority has provided 900 air-conditioned bus shelters to let passengers wait in cool comfort till their buses arrive.
But while these are a welcome addition, more than 100 of these modern bus shelters are not functioning properly, turning the aluminium and glass-frame structures into virtual ovens.
The RTA needs to ensure all of the shelters are functioning properly. In addition, it needs to provide adequate traditional shelters in areas where the new air-conditioned shelters are not provided yet.
But the responsibility to maintain these shelters does not rest solely with the RTA. Commuters need to ensure the doors are closed quickly and that the modern shelters are not misused.
