Dubai Metro’s much anticipated Green Line operations would be flagged off by Shaikh Mohammed, on September 9 this year, the Roads and Transport Authority announced on Tuesday.

Dubai Metro’s much anticipated Green Line operations would be flagged off by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on September 9 this year, the Roads and Transport Authority announced.

A shorter but vital line that zigzags through the heart of Dubai’s Central Business Districts, the Green Line is expected to further boost the Metro ridership and reduce the traffic considerably in the clogged old neighbourhoods of Deira and Bur Dubai.

“Metro ridership will rise considerably following the launch of the Green Line as it serves dynamic and high-density commercial, government and residential areas,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, as he announced the launch of Dubai Metro’s second line.

Starting from Al Qusais facing the Emirates Road, the Green Line runs up to 23km, eight of which are underground, and ends at Al Jaddaf opposite the Festival City.

A total of 14 trains are expected to run on the line during peak hours, while 10 would ply during off-peak hours with a headway of six to eight minutes. The line has 20 stations, including two transfer stations where the Green Line and Red Line crosses. However, only 18 stations would open to start with, as Al Jaddaf and Creek stations would open at a later date when enough developments crop up around them.

The train operation timings would be similar to that of Red Line and the stoppage duration would range from 20 to 30 seconds, depending on the demand on each station.

The Red Line and Green Line combined, a total of 50 trains would be operating during peak hours and 28 during off-peak hours. More info
