DUBAI: Walking to work and cycling to work can help encourage people to using public transport, said a senior officer from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
“We are encouraging the public to use non-conventional mobility modes such as bicycles and walking,” said the Director of Transport Policies, Legislations and Plans, Dr Abdul Malik Abu Al Sheikh.
When asked to elaborate on the plans of promoting use of bicycles in the city of Dubai, Dr Abdul Malik said their strategy “focuses on transport policies and legislations necessary for raising the community’s reliance on mass transit modes and curtailing the heavy reliance on private vehicles.”
The Emirate of Dubai is pursuing a target of at least 30 per cent of the use of public transport by the year 2020.
Chairman of the Board and the Executive Director of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer broke down the percentage share, saying the Metro would be taking 13 per cent and the rest will be shared by other modes of transport as buses, taxis and water taxis.
Dr Abdul Malik said that there are more plans in place. He said talked about the “upgrading of the intelligent transport systems.”
“A number of our projects have contributed to improvement in transport such as Salik, Nol, virtual messaging signs, processes control centre, automated bus tracking system and journey planner (wojhati) among others. More info
