As mobile applications begin to permeate Middle East daily life, in terms of both social and business use, experts say it will be consumer demand that drives the market.

Etihad rail to link Dubai, Abu Dhabi by 2016

Etihad Rail has announced a multi-billion dollar inter-emirate rail network project to link the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 2016, before it is extended to other parts in 2018, Alittihad has reported. The company, which is carrying out one of the largest train projects in the Middle East, said it would launch the second phase later this year and it would extend nearly 510km to link Abu Dhabi to Jebel Ali and Dubai city.

Massive infrastructure projects bring challenges for Gulf region

In the wake of the Arab Spring, governments across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have committed to massive infrastructure spending schemes designed to head off future discontent. In the GCC alone, total infrastructure spending over the next decade has been estimated at more than $1trn, and these projects will encompass everything from energy to transport, healthcare to education, transforming the region beyond recognition.

The ruler of Dubai has announced that a new opera house and modern art museum will be built in the emirate near the world’s tallest building as part of an effort to boost Dubai’s standing as a cultural hub. The new ‘Dubai Modern Art Museum & Opera House District’, which will be located on Emaar Boulevard in Downtown Dubai, is being billed as the UAE’s newest arts and cultural nerve-centre, according to a statement issued by state news agency WAM.
