Superbus could slash Dubai-Abu Dhabi commute to 30-mins

The commute between Abu Dhabi and neighbouring Dubai could be cut to 30 minutes with the launch of an electric-powered ‘Superbus’. The bus-limousine hybrid – which can reach the speeds of a high-speed train – can carry 23 passengers at 250km/h along a dedicated ‘speed track’.

New Salik tolls could be key source of cash for Dubai

Philippe Dauba Pantanacce, senior economist at Standard Chartered Bank, said the road tolls formed a vital part of government cashflow. “Salik is an indirect tax through a toll system and in a country where there is no direct taxation, except in a few circumstances, any source of revenue is better than nothing,” he told Arabian Business. “It is also much more reliable than hydrocarbon revenues for example.

The consortium of firms behind Dubai’s long-awaited Al Sufouh Tram project has begun a work slowdown as cash concerns continue to plague the multibillion-dollar track. The group, which includes French conglomerate Alstom and Belgium’s Besix, has scaled back the pace of construction on the state-backed tram as discussions over refinancing continue.

The Metro’s second line was originally slated for completion in April 2010 but was slowed by funding and contract delays in the wake of the economic crisis. “The Green Line will be completed in August of this year,” said Abdul Younes, the RTA’s CEO for strategy and corporate governance.
