Dubai: Roads and Transport Authority is planning to introduce almost 5.6 kilometres of bus and taxi lanes in various parts of the city commencing May 15.
After studying traffic flows, the RTA has moved on the dedicated lanes.
This move to dedicated lanes for public transport vehicles should be welcomed by all.
If Dubai is really committed to a comprehensive public transport policy, the dedicated lanes are vital. If more people are to use the Metro, getting to and from stations quickly is an essential element of this policy: dedicated bus and taxi lanes do just that.
For motorists who still believe that they rule the roads and make the selfish move of using these dedicated lanes, a Dh600 fine will be imposed. And rightly so.
In major urban centres, dedicated bus and taxi lanes are the norm. So too is giving priority to all forms of public transport. Bravo to the RTA.
