Bus owners have been told their drivers will be fined and have their licences confiscated if they stop their vehicles on the roadside to pray.
Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of Dubai’s traffic police, told The National newspaper that 284 fines have been issued to bus drivers since the start of this month. Of those, 28 have been repeat offenders and have had their bus impounded, he said.
“We have noted this behaviour and have warned drivers against the dangers of stopping on the side of the road,” Col Al Mazrouei said.
“Patrols are cracking down on this phenomenon. Despite warnings, some are committing the same offence again. This is why we impounded 28 buses.”
Those who stop by the roadside to pray will be fined $270 (AED1,000) and face having their licence confiscated. Dubai Police has been in contact with the company owners to warn of the crackdown on the practice. More info
