Expo 2020 awards $3bn in construction contracts in 2017

Expo 2020 has awarded $2.94 billion (AED10.8bn) in construction contracts in 2017, in addition to $111.9 million (AED411m) in non-construction contracts, according to officials.

Expo will reach its target of over $3 billion (AED11bn) after the awarding of urban planning ad event overlay packages due to be finalised early next year. These packages will be in addition to a number of other opportunities made available in 2018 as expo moves on to the next stage of its delivery, which is focused on operational expenditure.

Other sectors that will offer procurement opportunities next year to companies of all sizes include design, logistics, health and safety, construction and construction materials. The number and value of these contracts will be announced in the coming months.

The announcement came during the Expo Procurement Conference in Dubai, which was attended by more than 300 companies, including a large proportion of small and medium sized enterprises. To date, over half of all contracts awarded by Expo 2020 have gone to SMEs.

“This has been a significant year on the journey to Expo 2020 Dubai, and we are excited to continue our smooth progress into 2018, which will see us offer further opportunities to companies in the UAE and the wider region,” said Manal AlBayat, senior vice president of business development and integration at Expo 2020 Dubai.
