Dubai – The Smart Palms with free wireless Internet service and charging points will bloom not just in Dubai parks. Residents will soon be able to spot them in Dubai’s markets, as well.
After rolling out the free WiFi service in parks last week, the Dubai Municipality announced that it will extend the service to various markets run by the civic body also. Khalifa Hareb, director of Asset Management Department, Dubai Municipality, said the free Internet services at Dubai municipality’s markets will be similar to the Smart Palm project launched at DM parks.
The project has a palm tree-shaped, solar-powered tech hub that provides free wireless connection and facilities to recharge smartphones and tablets for park visitors.
Hareb said the project fulfills the directives of Director-General of the Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah, who instructed that all markets belonging to the Dubai municipality be provided with free WiFi service as fast as possible in line with the government’s initiative to make Dubai a Smart City.
In a Press statement, Hareb said his department, in the coming days, will conduct the required study and specify the locations at various Dubai markets where the service will be provided.
He said the service will be launched in public markets such as the recently opened truck market, the soon-to-be inaugurated market for birds and pets, Al Fahidi traditional market, the upcoming fish market, the boats market, the used furniture market, Hatta market, and Al Lusaili market to make things easy for the municipality’s customers.
