More than 300,000 adult workers are to be taught how to safely cross the road.
The joint Ministry of Labour and Dubai Police campaign ‘Cross Safely’ has been set up to target workers in labour camps to be aware of road traffic rules – and how ignoring them can result in tragic accidents.
Eleven people have died in the first three months of this year while trying to cross roads from unauthorised places, according to Dubai Police. Last week Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Deputy Head of Dubai Traffic Police, declared that “80 per cent of Dubai pedestrians don’t have enough education for crossing the roads”.
In the first three months of this year Dubai Police has handed out 24,085 fines for jaywalking. About 4,000 workers have already benefitted from the campaign since it started on April 1, a statement issued by the ministry said. More info
