The man overseeing the construction of Riyadh’s $23bn Metro system tells CW’s conference that work is progressing well.
Alwalid Elekrish, director of construction projects for Arriyadh Development Authority, has the somewhat daunting task of overseeing one of the world’s biggest projects – the $23bn Riyadh Metro. Elekrish is director in charge of the Riyadh Metro project.
Already, several years of study and detailed design work have gone into the plan, which is the cornerstone for a wider investment in public transport for the Saudi capital that will include a network of feeder and commuter buses.
Riyadh is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the world and has doubled in size over the past 25 years. It currently has a population of 5.7mn, and is expected to grow to more than 8mn by 2030. It has very little transport provision, with people relying on private buses, drivers or taxis to get around.
