Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has approved a plan to convert 25 percent of all transport journeys in the emirate to self-driving trips by 2030.
According to state news agency WAM, Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the RTA has approved the strategy.
To realise the objectives of the strategy, the RTA said it is seeking to introduce legislation and rules for self-driving transport, and develop conditions for testing and licensing of self-driving vehicles.
Al Tayer said in comments published by WAM that it is also devising a structure for insurance and liability, and addressing the requirements of infrastructure in Dubai.
High-definition e-maps will also be developed to avail the use of technologies and beat geographical and climatic conditions, he added.
“Dubai’s strategy is inclusive of all mass transit modes such as trains, buses, marine transit modes and taxis, as well as private vehicles, while many countries focus on a limited number of transit modes,” Al Tayer said.
He added that the RTA’s recently opened Enterprise Command and Control Centre will play a pivotal role in providing real-time and accurate information, in addition to research and development. More info
