Dubai The Dubai Department of Finance announced Wednesday that it has completed dual currency financing of $675 million (Dh2.48 billion) to complete phase 1 of the construction of the Al Sufouh Tram project. Earlier this month, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded a 13-year maintenance contract for the Al Sufouh tramway to a consortium comprising Alstom and Cofely Besix Facility Management (FM).

The Roads '&' Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a 13-year maintenance contract for Al Safouh Tramway to a consortium comprised of the French Alstom Co. and the Emirati-Belgian Cofely-Besix Co., including an option for a five-year extension. The total value of the contract amounts to AED 851 million.

Dubai’s transport agency has no plans to push back the completion date for the city’s Al Sufouh tram, despite a construction slowdown on the project caused by funding woes, an official said. The 14km tram has seen building work slow after the emirate’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA’s) struggled to meet the project’s payment schedule.

The first phase of Dubai's latest transport scheme, which will be the world's first tram that runs with ground power feeding on the entire line without need for electrical overhead wires, is set for completion in 2014.

Sheikh Mohammed was briefed by Eng. Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Board Chairman, Executive Director of Road and Transport Authority (RTA), about the route of Tram, which extends 14.7 km along Al Sufouh Street. 10.7 km will be executed in the first phase at cost Dh4 billion. It will start from Marina district to Emirates Mall.
