Announced in the heady days of 2008, the Al Sufouh Tram project was a casualty of the downturn and the project gathered dust for two years. But the ambitious public transit system has rebounded and the first trams will start rolling next year.

Work on the construction of Al Sufouh Tram in Dubai is resuming after the Department of Finance yesterday announced it had secured the bank funding.

Dubai’s transport agency has no plans to push back the completion date for the city’s Al Sufouh tram, despite a construction slowdown on the project caused by funding woes, an official said. The 14km tram has seen building work slow after the emirate’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA’s) struggled to meet the project’s payment schedule.

Dubai’s long-awaited Al Sufouh tram project could see its launch date delayed further as liquidity woes continue to slow construction, Arabian Business has learned. The consortium of firms behind the 14km tram scaled back work in the wake of the global crisis as Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) struggled to meet its payments.

The system would connect existing transport networks, including the Dubai Metro and the Palm Monorail on Palm Jumeirah. It would link with the Metro's Red Line at two stops, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Dubai Marina, according to the RTA.

The first phase of Dubai's latest transport scheme, which will be the world's first tram that runs with ground power feeding on the entire line without need for electrical overhead wires, is set for completion in 2014.
