tudents and professionals in Dubai will soon have an option to study courses covering the transport sector, which so far is not well-represented at most local universities. With public transport gaining a lot of attention in the region, the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) decision to tie up with local institutions to encourage tailor-made programmes offering specialisation in various aspects of transport operations is just what the doctor ordered.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also launched a series of projects, including an extended railway plan until 2030, a car pooling project, a pedestrian bridges project and bicycle racecourse. The Vice-President, on his visit to the headquarters of the Roads and Transport Authority also inaugurated the Middle East and North Africa Transportation Excellence Centre.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), says that the RTA attaches special attention to disseminating knowledge and maximizing the benefits from the existing knowledge & expertise of the RTA, considering it a key component of upgrading the qualifications of employees, enhancing the production quality, and contributing to the Educated Institution concept.

Representatives from Alstom, the French engineering company handling the project, said yesterday at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Mobility and City Transport Exhibition that construction had resumed with some changes to the original plan and a renewed focus on prompt completion.

GulfRail 2012, the region's first of its kind exhibition and conference is participating in the 59th World Congress and Exhibition of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), which is taking place in Dubai from April 10-14.

His Excellency H.E. Maurice Leroy, Minister of the City, stated that the French firms and factories specialized in various transport fields would be strongly represented in the 59th International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Congress and Exhibition to be hosted by Dubai from 10 to 14 April 2011 under the theme: Boosting Public Transport ... Action!.

"The share of mass transit trips increased from 6 per cent in 2008 to 12 per cent in 2010 and RTA targets to push it further to as much as 30 per cent by 2020 through counting on the Metro, public buses, water bus, water taxi and Ferry Dubai, once launched," said Mohammad Obaid Al Mulla, Board Member and CEO of the RTA.

The Public Transport Agency, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has recently hosted in its Head Office, Muhaisnah 4, the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Free metro, bus and water bus rides will be offered to all Nol Card holders on November 1, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA, announced the launch of ‘Public Transport Day’ initiative on November 1st, 2010 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the RTA in a speech at the 125th anniversary of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Brussels.
