Makkah is witnessing mega-development projects at a combined cost of more than SR300 billion, according to Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar.

The ministerial committee for transport in Makkah province met here on Wednesday to review the progress of a plan to beef up the public transport system in the province, including the cities of Jeddah and Makkah.

Nearly a quarter of a new high-speed railway line designed to ease travel for pilgrims in Saudi Arabia has been built, a senior official has said.

Known as the Makkah Metro, the 62 billion Saudi riyal ($16.5 billion) project calls for the construction of a four-line rail network and a call for tenders is due to be launched in January 2013, mayor Osama Al Bar said.

Another railway operator in Malaysia, Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) has been trusted to second 13 of its staff to Mecca's Metro Line, an 18-kilometre railway system in Saudi Arabia, to assist the company during the busy Haj season.

A project rail boom within the transport sector in the Middle East and North Africa is expected to materialise in the next three years as the region allocates more than $250bn worth of investments in various rail projects.

The 67-km Orange line will connect Makkah Road with Obhur, passing through the central part of the city northward. It will have 22 stations besides a branch line to the east along Sari Street, Kutubkhana said. The 24-km Blue line will link King Abdulaziz International Airport to the Old Airport Road with 17 stations. The 17-km Green line will run along Palestine Road with a branch to the Old Airport and end at the Haramain Railway. It will have only seven stations, the official said.

Saudi Arabia is preparing plans to build a metro system in its second largest city Jeddah, a project that would cost around SAR35 billion ($9.3 billion), a deputy mayor of the city said on Sunday.

Saudi Arabian authorities have launched a tender process to develop a new metro transit system in the capital Riyadh. In a notice on the Arriyadh Development Authority’s website, “global consortia” were invited to bid to provide infrastructure including rolling stock and telecommunications, as well as tunnelling, civil, mechanical and electrical works.
