Qatar Railways Company, which is building a $35bn metro and railway system in the state, plans to award contracts for the elevated metro sections in the second quarter of next year.

The metro and rail system, which would include a connection to Bahrain, will cost $35 billion to $40 billion to build, Mee said. The first phase of the project will connect the airport in the south to a racetrack on the northern outskirts of the capital Doha, he added. The second phase will extend the network to cities in the north and south.

Projects in the pipeline include a 25-billion-dollar metro and rail network, some sections of which will be ready for the World Cup, and a 10-billion-dollar Doha International Airport, the first phase of which will open in 2012.
