The cellist Julian Lloyd Webber once described piped music as “an insidious cancer that has spread throughout society”. It’s almost impossible to get away from it in shops, hotels, airports and everywhere that there are large numbers of people coming and going. For many, it’s the single most irritating thing about modern life.

News of the Metro’s launch was music to most people’s ears. But many of those who use it every day are finding the experience far from harmonious. Many commuters say they have had enough of the repetitive, electronic music track piped-in while they make their way to and from work.
