DOHA: Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail), the company which is overseeing the construction of the country’s integrated railway network, has awarded one of the largest ever single project tunnelling and rail construction insurance policies to a six-member consortium of Qatari National Insurance Companies, led by Qatar Insurance Company (QIC), with additional capacity from international reinsurers and QFC registered insurers.

Three sources, who did not wish to be identified since the information is not public, said the tender, issued earlier this month, is for the rolling stock, systems, depot facilities, trackwork and other aspects of Doha Metro. The project has been under scrutiny due to delays in giving contracts and starting work.

“The Doha Metro is a long-term asset with a life cycle of 120 years, constructed for the people of Qatar as part of the Qatar National Vision 2030. “The FIFA World Cup 2022 is a very important global event, but still only one of many milestones during the design life of the Doha Metro,”

The tunnel-boring work for Doha Metro will start in the third quarter of this year even as construction is progressing on 21 stations, a senior official at Qatar Rail said yesterday.

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) held a workshop in co-operation with Ministry of Interior and other government entities specialised in the safety field to introduce security and safety standards of Doha Metro, encompassing from the initial design phase to the operation phase.

Aiming at providing speedier and hassle-free services to people affected by the ongoing Doha Metro project, Qatar Rail has opened an office at the Buildings Permit Compound at Doha Municipality.

The tiny, gas-rich country plans to spend as much as $140 billion on infrastructure projects, including a new airport, stadiums, roads and railways, as it prepares to host the World Cup tournament.

The Qatar Rail Development Programme will offer time-saving and environment-friendly transportation solutions, Qatar Rail Company (Qatar Rail) CEO Saad Ahmed al-Muhannadi has said.

The last stage of the project will start after the underground Metro station is finished.
