Following the approval of the masterplan and design of the Doha Metro, Qatar Rail has kicked off its ambitious project and aims to launch the country's first metro service in the last quarter of 2019, said a report.

Projects in the pipeline are wide-ranging, from schools, hospitals and other key social infrastructure projects to the Doha Metro and railway projects at an estimated total cost of QR131bn ($36bn).

Trillions of dollars will be spent on transport infrastructure projects before 2020, with the majority of these investments in the emerging markets.

Keeping Doha moving is an issue as Qatar prepares to host football’s Fifa World Cup in 2022. The highest levels of government have highlighted the challenge, and the problem now rests with clients such as Qatar Railways Company (QRail) and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), as they prepare to award billions of dollars of construction contracts this year.

Qatar Rail, the company overseeing the construction of the country's much-anticipated integrated railway network, is participating in the upcoming UN Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) Conference at the Qatar National Conference Centre (QNCC) from 4-6 February.

DOHA: Work on three metro rail stations, in Msheireb, Al Rayyan and behind the Qatar National Museum, is expected to begin shortly as part of the Qatar Integrated Railway project.

A tender for the manufacturing of rail coaches and control systems for Qatar's $41bn Greater Doha Metro project is likely to be floated by the second quarter of 2013.

The US$25bn Doha Metro 85km railway network is one of the transport projects planned to connect urban and rural landscapes and reduce Qatar's pollution and congestion.

Qatar will see an upsurge in project tenders and awards in the next two years which is likely to hit $30 billion, as the country enters the next crucial phase of its preparations for the Fifa World Cup 2022 and its bid for the Summer Olympics in 2020, said an expert.

Qatar Rail CEO Caad Ahmed al-Muhannadi said: “Phase 1 of the Doha Metro is scheduled to be operational in Q4 2019.” The $79m enabling works on the first phase of the project is being carried out by a JV between Austrian tunnelling specialist Porr Group alongside Qatari firm HBK Contracting and the Saudi Binladin Group.
