QATAR: Qatar Rail has signed the first round of engineering and consultancy contracts for the planned US$36bn national network of railway and metro routes.

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has launched its inaugural legal panel with the appointment of seven law firms.

Rail schemes are the main reason for the surge in regional tunnelling activity, but water and road projects are also keeping firms busy.

Siemens will build 15 high-voltage sub-stations in Sheraton Park, the Ministry of Interior, Bin Mahmoud, Abu Sidra and Grand Hamad area, at a cost of QR700mn. The work is linked to the development of Doha’s Business district, power supply to Doha’s Metro Rail project and the future power requirements of the new international convention centre in West Bay.

Resourcing International, a subsidiary of the Resourcing Solutions Group has successfully tendered to recruit for Qatar Rail, the company at the core of Qatar’s ‘infrastructure dream’.

Drilling work for Qatar’s Doha Metro will start at the beginning of 2013, Saad Al Mohannadi, Qatar Railway Development Co.’s chief executive officer said.

QATAR Railways Company (QRC) will issue the first request for proposals for the country's $US 40bn rail network in the first week of April. Four tunnelling contracts for the first phase of the Doha Metro, each worth $US 2-3bn, will be launched with winners set to be announced in October.

The GCC has US$142 billion worth of road and bridge projects underway, or in the planning stages, according to figures released by market analysts Ventures Middle East; Saudi Arabia accounts for a third of this amount. Railway projects, including rail, metro, tram, and stations are valued at US$79 billion, this includes the US$30 billion GCC rail network.

The massive project includes plans for a high-speed long distance rail link, driverless four-line Metro service for Doha and freight lines. The plans also include the West Bay People Mover, and overground rail system designed to distribute passengers around Doha’s tower district.
