Gulf residents are far from closing the gap with their counterparts in North Africa and the Levant (NAL) when it comes to using public transport.

The launch of the second line of the Dubai Metro - the Green Line, has been delayed yet again. The line, which was originally slated to open in April 2010 and then postponed to August 2011, will now be operational in the last quarter of this year, according to the top executive of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Pioneering the mass transit system in the region with the world’s largest driverless rail system, Dubai aims to extend the rail network further from the current 75km to over 250km by the next decade. The extensive network will include tramways as well as more Metro lines, one of which would connect the Dubai International Airport with Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali.

Local Arabs – who make up some 20 per cent of Dubai’s population – can also be reluctant to mix with the Indians, Pakistanis and Filipinos who make up Dubai’s working class, according to Mohamed Mezghani, head of the Middle East office of UITP, the international public transport association.

Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an awareness campaign among workers at Sinabor, Dubai to educate them on the safe road crossing to avoid traffic accidents, especially run-over accidents. Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic & Roads Agency, said that the awareness campaign was a part of the Gulf Traffic Week 2011 Program, which spanned various age groups and occupational categories with a host of traffic awareness programs.
