After effectively implementing the heavy trailer testing system in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has proposed to authorities in other emirates to adopt the system in order to curb the number of accidents caused by heavy vehicles. Heavy vehicles are estimated to cause more than 20 per cent of accidents on highways, many of them due to ill-maintained and faulty trailers, claiming dozens of lives every year.

"I'm not sure what the monetary amount is exactly but it is a few million fines we are still waiting to have paid," said Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, chief executive of the RTA's licensing agency. "The current procedure of retrieving payments is done manually. The RTA sends a list of fines of non-UAE vehicles to the Ministry of Interior and they forward the information to the concerned departments of the other [Arabian] Gulf countries.
Most residents want Dubai Metro to run 24|7
Majority of the respondents (71 per cent) who took part in the poll, believe that Dubai never sleeps so why should the Metro stop running even at odd hours. On the other hand, 26 per cent say that there is no pressing need for the Metro to run all the time, whereas a 3 per cent of the participants were not sure about the hours of operation.

739,000 travel for free in Dubai on Public Transport Day
Almost three quarters of a million commuters travelled for free on the Metro, buses and water taxis to mark Public Transport Day yesterday. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) estimates that 739,000 passengers took advantage of the waived fees, an increase of more than 42,000 from last year.
