The current decade will be known as the golden years of rail in the Middle East if the huge pipeline of planned rail projects in the region comes to fruition. With more than $200bn worth of mainline, metro and tram projects either planned or under way, the region from Morocco to Iran is going through an unprecedented rail construction boom.

Gulf oil producers are expected to pump nearly $16 billion into an ambitious project to construct a rail way linking them, one of the largest rail ventures in the world.

Only Dh66.3 billion ($18 billion) of public investment in rail projects have been achieved so far in the Middle East and North Africa Region (Mena), home to one of the fastest growing rail markets in the world with an estimated project value of Dh700 billion ($190 billion), rail experts said on Monday at a conference on Mena Rail Projects 2012 Summit held in Abu Dhabi.

Another railway operator in Malaysia, Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) has been trusted to second 13 of its staff to Mecca's Metro Line, an 18-kilometre railway system in Saudi Arabia, to assist the company during the busy Haj season.
