Dubai The Dubai Metro is fast becoming a mass transport system with around 35 per cent of commuters taking the train to work, said a senior official.

Dubai has become the fifth city in the world, following London, New York, Munich and Melbourne that applies Journey Planner; an initiative, billed as “Wojhati, launched by Public Transport Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA)” in the first quarter of this year, which was well received by a wide segment of public transport users in Dubai.

H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed that all construction works on the 19 stations on the Red Line of Dubai Metro have been completed, and that electromechanical works in the said stations range from 80 to 97%, adding that RTA is all set to phase out the opening of the stations in February 2010.

The Dubai Metro will be free for disabled passengers by February next year, the RTA announced today.

For his part the Irish diplomat congratulated H.E. Mattar Al Tayer on the opening of Dubai Metro Project and stressed that Dubai had once again proved to the world its ability to face and overcome challenges through delivering unprecedented achievements.

Following the opening of the Dubai Metro this year, the next stage - the Green Line - is scheduled to open in March 2010. It is the world's longest fully automated rail transport system and when completed the Dubai Metro will have 70 kilometres (43 miles) of lines, and 47 stations.

The Dubai Metro’s second line is likely to open on Oct. 10 next year, or 10/10/10, as the city’s transport authority continues with its theme of catchy launch dates, sources have told Maktoob Business.

Besides the expanded infrastructure at the airport, roads and highways, the opening of Dubai Metro — all strengthens Dubai's attractions as a global hub.

Metro is pretty clean and ride was smooth with nice views of the city.
