The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has discussed with its partners the progress made in the initiative themed “Generations Safety, a Shared Responsibility”, which was launched three years ago in partnership with three government entities viz.
Dubai Police, Dubai Health Authority and Emirates Transport in coordination with the Dubai Educational Zone, Knowledge & Human Development Authority, various ministries and local & federal departments.
Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, said, “The concerted government efforts made in collaboration with the private sector will contribute significantly to realizing the objectives of traffic safety across the UAE.”
The RTA has apprised partners and supporters from local & federal institutions and ministries of the achievements made by “Generations Safety, a Shared Responsibility” initiative and showcased the progress made in realizing the two objectives of the initiative, namely spreading traffic awareness among children & mothers and addressing the traffic safety requirements. Statistics showed that fatal traffic accidents plummeted to zero level in Dubai schools during the past three years from 2010 to 2012, and traffic fatalities among the age group 1-18 decreased by 41% in the same period, whereas the number of fatalities caused by female drivers dropped by 64%.
During the initiative, more than 74 awareness publications were prepared & designed and more than 700,000 copies were printed, including “Salama” monthly magazine, in addition to preparing educative cartoons & awareness flashes aired via children-oriented satellite channels, websites and e-forums. The technical operations related to providing traffic safety requirements covered a host of Dubai schools, which have seen a marked improvement in traffic & engineering procedures such as setting up traffic calming devices, erecting directional signs and building pedestrian crossings.
The initiative coordinators in ministries & government departments discussed activities and events carried out by these entities, in addition to the future development plans related to the initiative and the chances to win some of the local and global awards in this regard.
The RTA worked with several government offices to launch the “Generations Safety, a Shared Responsibility” initiative early 2010 to consolidate the awareness efforts and further educate mothers with the aim of boosting traffic safety and reducing deaths & injuries in the age group (1 month – 18 years).
