For the first time, Dubai has outranked Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international travel.
Dubai received 67.3 million international passengers from February 2013 to February 2014, while Heathrow received 66.9 million, according to Airports Council International (ACI).
Dubai’s growth has been rapid. Only a decade ago, the airport ranked 45th in the world, according to The New York Times. Dubai’s international connections have grown so quickly in large part because of its location. The airport is within an eight-hour flight of two-thirds of the world’s population, allowing it to outpace Heathrow so quickly.
However, Dubai is not the busiest airport by passengers total. That honor goes to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which saw 95 million passengers — many of them domestic — in the same 12-month period. More info
