Several roads will be closed for periods on Friday for the Dubai Challenge Triathlon.

A record number of triathletes will be participating in the event, the first of its kind in the region.

Ahmed Al Haj, the event director, said that the organising committee had finished preparing the course for the three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running.

The swimming leg will begin from Jumeirah Beach Park at 6.45am and the last batch of swimmers is expected to enter the water at 8am.

From there the 90-kilometre cycling contest will move in the direction of Meydan, passing through Al Safa Park and Nad Al Sheba before moving to Al Ain Road, turning right to Al Aweer Industrial, University City, and Technical College, then heading towards Warsan area, before finally returning to the starting point at Jumeirah Beach.

The event is organised under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of Dubai Sports Council.

The top 10 finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories will win a share of US$300,000 (Dh1.1 million) in prize money.

The top finisher in each category will receive $65,000 while the runners-up will receive $35,000. Each of the third-place finishers will pocket $20,000. More info
