Mexico City: Two metro trains carrying passengers crashed in Mexico City on Monday, leaving at least 12 people injured, authorities said.

They gave no immediate explanation for the crash, though media reports showed two cars smashed together and said that one train ran into another that had stopped at the platform.

City Fire Chief Raul Esquivel told the Televisa network there were no deaths from the accident, adding that 40 firefighters were on the scene.

The Mexico City Metro System said via its Twitter account that three of the 12 injured were hospitalized.

The accident occurred in the Oceania station on Line 5 near the city’s international airport. The Mexico City metro has 12 lines.

Ambulance sirens blared as police officers waved clogged traffic through the flooded street next to the station.

The trains could be seen buckled on the tracks, as rescue workers milled about. Officers loaded passengers into police trucks to take them to the next station. More info
