Work on the $22.5bn (SAR84.4bn) Riyadh Metro project is on track for scheduled completion, the Kingdom’s transport minister said.

2Abdullah Al-Muqbil denied the rail project in Saudi Arabia’s capital will be opened later than its scheduled 2018 opening.

Work on the project began in April 2014 after Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) announced the project’s winning design and build bids.

Al-Muqbil said work on the project is progressing speedily, with 25% of the development already completed.

The decline in global oil prices fuelled rumours that the 176.7km six-line metro network will be delayed, but Al-Muqbil denied these remarks.

According to Reuters, Al-Muqbil “exuded confidence that the project will be completed within the next three years and also indicated that there are some metro lines, work on which will end ahead of schedule”. More info
