The Dubai Metro is proving a hit with commuters, with 97,527 passengers travelling between the 10 stations on the Red Line on Sunday, the first day of the Eid Holidays.

The figure, provided by the RTA, was well up on the 60,837 passengers who used the new rail network on Friday.

The metro, Dubai’s first, was opened by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, less than a fortnight ago on 09/09/09.

Dr. Aysha Al Busmait Director of RTA’s Customer Service Centres also confirmed that a “Musanada” or support team had been rolled out earlier this week to help commuters using the new railway line for the first time. The supporters wear “Ask Me” tags and are there to help people to use the ticketing systems.

The RTA also announced earlier this week that special needs passengers can travel for free, while students and the elderly will be able to use half-price tickets.
