Construction of the second phase of the Expo 2020 Dubai site is on track for completion before the end of 2018, according to the mega-project’s vice president of real estate and delivery.

“Phase 1 infrastructure has reached completion, and we are now in testing and commissioning,” Ahmed Al Khatib, Expo 2020’s vice president for real estate and delivery, told the Construction UAE Summit 2018.

“It is really happening right now – Expo 2020 Dubai is no longer just an idea or a promise. It is a reality,” he said in comments published by Construction Week Online, the organiser of the summit.

He added that the Expo 2020 metro station is “starting to take shape” while steel production is ongoing at a “very fast pace” for Al Wasl Plaza, the centrepiece of the Expo site.

The Middle East arm of Cimolai Rimond, an Abu Dhabi-based joint venture between Italian firms Cimolai, a structural steelmaker and contractor and construction contractor Rimond, was awarded the contract to build Al Wasl’s steel structure in November 2017.

Expo 2020 Dubai is expected to draw over 25 million visitors from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021.

Dubai was selected to host the 2020 World Expo in 2013. The Expo’s overarching theme is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” with sub-themes focusing on Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability. More
