The Public Transport Agency, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has recently hosted in its Head Office, Muhaisnah 4, the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Awhali, Undersecretary of Transport, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the UITP’s MENA region in the presence of Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, CEO and Board Member of the RTA and Chairperson of the Higher Organizing Committee of the 59th UITP Congress to be organized by the RTA in April 2011.
In a speech delivered in the meeting, Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla welcomed the attendants headed by the H.E. Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Awhali (Undersecretary of Transport, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), and members comprising Khalid Mohammed Hashim (Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi), Huub Hendrickx (Voith Turbo Ltd, Dubai), Khalid Al Hujail (SAPTCO, Saudi Arabia), Ahmed Al Ansari (Mowasalat Agency, Qatar), Abdul Aziz Malik (CEO of Dubai Taxi Corporation), Omru Nassir (Commercial Vehicles Manufacturing, Egypt), and Kerem Tas (Daimler Chrysler). The meeting also included the representatives of the UITP: Tony Dofias (Regional Director of the UITP, Brussels, Belgium), Abdullah Nassir (Regional Director, UITP’s MENA Region), and Mrs. Ango Gomes (Officer, UITP’s MENA Office).
“On this occasion we would like to reiterate RTA’s absolute readiness to organize the 59th UITP Congress in April 2011 as all preparations have been finalized for the reception of participants in this important event; which is held for the first time in the MENA region here in the UAE, particularly in Dubai; the pioneer city in hosting international conventions and exhibitions representing business, service, commercial, tourist and financial sectors among others,” said Al Mulla.
The meeting discussed a number of issues and topics within the prerogatives of the of the UITP’s MENA Executive Committee such as UITP’s MENA General Assembly, the Region’s dedicated session in the next 59th Congress along with the accompanying and forthcoming events and expos in the region, progress of membership in MENA countries, membership fees, working groups, public transport in the region up to 2025, training issues, public transport ads in the region, emerging government authorities offering support to public transport projects, and members latest news.
