Dubai Municipality has recently won one of the Arab Achievement Awards (AAA) organised by ‘I Global’ aiming to crown and honour the companies and organisations that have played an important role in the Arab region. The municipality won this award for the environment friendly pedestrian corridors design project named Eco-Walk.
The AAA is aimed to recognise companies and organisations that own, manage and create projects that have had a significant impact on the development and promotion of the Arabian region.
Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality has received the award in the presence of a number of officials. He said that these awards crown the efforts of the municipality in planning and meeting the needs of society according to the goals and directions sought by the civic body to create a green environment.
“The project aims to exploit solar energy to provide a comfortable environment for pedestrian traffic especially in summer. It provides an innovative design for umbrellas installed on the sidewalks along with shading and cooling fans, which reduces the temperature 5-10 degrees. The project also provides services for pedestrians, such as refrigerators, drinking water, and automated teller machines using solar modules mounted on umbrellas. The cost-effective design provides possibilities of multiple ads, and offers three alternatives for the outside structure of umbrellas to fit the sites,” Lootah said.
“This project comes within the initiatives of municipality to promote sustainable development using alternative and clean energy and rational use of electricity reducing carbon emissions, in addition to the promotion of sustainable transport facilitating the pedestrian’s movement to Dubai Metro stations,” he added.
