Clutching at whatever information it can get, the state anti-terrorism squad (ATS) is now looking for a man who had been spotted near the Dadar terror site hours before the blast, asking about “Metro rail” route. The police have recorded statements of two shopkeepers who are believed to have interacted with him.
“His accent seemed to indicate someone belonging to Kolkata. There is no Metro rail in Mumbai, but in Delhi. The way he asked questions was suspicious, which is why two shopkeepers reported the incident to investigators. His description was taken and the time noted,” said a police source.
ATS has been focusing on some suspects from Kolkata and, in fact, ATS chief Rakesh Maria had sought information about some people from West Bengal as well.
The description of this man has been given to the ATS team on the case.
The Dadar bomb was planted on the roof of a bus stop, which killed one and injured 14 others. Sources in the ATS said that the three bomb blasts at Zaveri bazaar, Opera House and Dadar where 24 people were killed and 128 injured could be the handiwork of some splinter groups. “We have been checking all members of banned outfits.
However, it seems to be the handiwork of some new group, which might have taken part in earlier terror strikes as well,” said an officer. The police were questioning three motorcycle mechanics at the Kalachowkie ATS unit, four others at the Vikhroli unit and more in other police offices.
On Monday evening, Rakesh Maria went to brief state home minister about progress in the investigation. He is learnt to have told senior officials about some “important lead”.
