Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Sunday gave the green light to designs for stations and trains planned for the Al Sufouh Tram project.
The first phase of Dubai’s latest transport scheme, which will be the world’s first tram that runs with ground power feeding on the entire line without need for electrical overhead wires, is set for completion in 2014.
Sheikh Mohammed and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, endorsed the interior design of the tram vehicles as well as a number of other Road and Transport Authority (RTA) initiatives, state news agency WAM said.
It said the first phase of the network will span 10.7km and cost AED4bn.
