DUBAI – In a move to mark the 40th National Day of the UAE, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered changing the name of Al Diyafah Street in Dubai into ‘2nd of December’ Street.

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said the new name will cover the 2,500-metre long street, stretching from the Union House (Dar Al Ittihad) off Jumeirah Road, crossing Al Satwa to the Dubai World Trade Centre Roundabout.

The street enjoys a historic importance as it leads to Dar Al Ittihad, the landmark location that saw the declaration of the UAE on the December 2, 1971.

It is also considered one of Dubai’s oldest and most vital streets. “The RTA will start implementing His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s directives within the coming 48 hours by replacing the road signs in the area,” Al Tayer said.

In a related development, Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, opened on Saturday, in presence of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works, the new Shaikh Khalifa highway which links Dubai and Fujairah. The opening ceremony was held as part of the celebrations of the UAE’s 40th National Day anniversary.
