Dubai: Construction work on the Al Sufouh Tram Project to be linked with the Red Line of the Dubai Metro is progressing fast and the project is expected to open in 2012, a senior official said.“We are focusing on the completion work on the first phase of the 14 kilometres-long Al Sufouh Tram which runs on Al Sufouh Road, Dubai Marina and the Jumeirah Beach Residences,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), during a meeting with Hans Rat, Secretary General of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP).
He said the tram will be linked to the Metro Red Line at the Marina station and the Mall of the Emirates station. It will also provide a vital link between the Dubai Metro and the Mono Rail operating at Palm Jumeirah.
The tram line will have 19 stations. The fleet will comprise of eight trains in the initial stage and 17 trains in the second phase.
During the meeting, Al Tayer also discussed with Rat several issues relating to the RTA’s preparations for hosting the 59th UITP World Congress and Exhibition in 2011.
