Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is exploring alternative modes of transport in the Zabeel and Burj Khalifa areas, including monorails and people mover systems, according to a senior official.

Abdulla Yousef Al Ali, CEO – Rail Agency, (RTA), told Construction Week the studies were being carried out in parallel with the AED3.7bn ($1bn) Dubai Tram project, which is set to start running in November.

The first phase of Dubai Tram is a 10km long route which will stretch along Al Sufouh Road and consists of 11 stations. It will also link with metro stops at Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers.

Speaking in reference to proposals for Zabeel and Burj Khalifa, Al Ali said it was important that other parts of Dubai were opened up to public transport: “We have not decided which mode we are going with but we are studying those areas.” More info
