Emaar Properties categorically said on Sunday that it has no plans to build another high-rise building that is taller than the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, it built four years ago.
Emaar, one of the leading property companies in the region, was denying reports by a section of the media that the Dubai-based developer was mulling the construction of another iconic high-rise structure to rival the 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa.
In a statement, Emaar sought to clarify a statement made by chairman Mohamed Alabbar in a television interview.
“In a television conversation with CNN during April this year, company chairman Mohamed Alabbar discussed tall towers and modern technologies that make it possible for Dubai to build another tall building. The current media reports use this April conversation as a source, which does not spell a firm decision,” the statement said.
“Emaar, however, does not have any current plans to develop a building taller than Burj Khalifa in Dubai.”
Built in October 2009, Burj Khalifa, the current tallest tower in the world, will be overtaken by Jeddah’s one kilometre-high Kingdom Tower, due to be completed in five years. The Kingdom Tower, being built by Saudi BinLadin Group, has been designed by architecture firm Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill, whose principals oversaw the construction of the Burj Khalifa. More info
On Sunday, reports in a section of the media quoted Alabbar as saying in an interview to CNN that Emaar plans to build the tallest skyscraper in the world in Dubai. The interview was on the sidelines of launching of a $3 billion development in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
Alabbar cited the great ambitions of the Dubai as the reason behind Emaar choosing to build the new tallest tower in Dubai.
