Dubai: Monthly travel passes and special discounted fare cards for students and senior citizens to travel on the Dubai Metro will be introduced gradually after the launch of the Metro operation on September 9, a Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official said.

“Different categories of Nol cards will be introduced in phases and only the basic cards – Silver and Gold and the single journey Red tickets will be available at the time of the Metro launch,” said Ramadan Abdullah Mohammad, Director of Rail Operations at the RTA’s Rail Agency.

Students and senior citizens will get 50 per cent discount on the given fare.

He said the special discounted passes for senior citizens, students and people with special needs would be rolled out gradually after two to four months of the operation being launched. Similarly, the monthly passes for unlimited travel will also be introduced a couple of months after the Metro becomes operational.

The RTA has already announced the Unified Automated Fare Collection Cards (UAFC) named the ‘Nol Cards’ for the Metro and public buses.

Fares for the Metro will range from a minimum Dh1.8 to maximum Dh6.5 for a single journey. A daily pass will cost Dh14 for unlimited trips on the Metro and public buses all over the city. The monthly passes range from Dh100, Dh180 and Dh270.

Mohammad said senior citizens (60 and above) students and people with special needs will have to register with the RTA to get their discounted cards. The RTA will soon announce the procedure for the registration.

The Nol Red cards, Nol Silver Cards and the Nol Blue cards will be available closer to the launch. He said card registration and top-up facilities would also be made available online closer to the launch.
