The minimum speed limit on the Emirates Road and the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road could be raised from 60 kilometres per hour (kph) to 100kph under proposals put forward by the UAE’s Federal Traffic Council.
The director of the council said that the current minimum speed limit has led to traffic congestion, and an increased risk of rear-end collisions.
“We decided to change the minimum speed limits on those two roads after studies showed that a wide gap between maximum and minimum speed limits is a key cause of accidents on highways,” said General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, according to the Emarat Al Youm Arabic daily. “The gap should not exceed 20kph.” More info
