New smart cameras that can catch drivers using phones, backseat passengers not using seatbelts and tail-gaters are being rolled out in Sharjah.

The radars, which started being used in June ahead of new rules that make not buckling up in the back an offence, are operational on parts of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and more are being installed on various Sharjah roads.

Drivers who use their phones, take the hard shoulder, fail to leave a proper distance between the car in front, or anyone in a car that fails to fasten their seatbelts will be caught by the smart radars, said Major Mohammad Al Naqbi, director of the patrols and traffic department at Sharjah Police.

He said that the cameras can spot all passengers in a vehicle and make an immediate video recording of any violation committed by them.

Maj Al Naqbi added that the move aims to result in a decrease in accidents and fatalities.

On July 1 traffic regulations were updated so that it is now an offence for back-seat passengers to not wear a seatbelt and violators can be fined Dh400. More info
