Thousands of male commuters have been fined for entering the women and children’s compartment on the Dubai Metro since the penalty was brought in.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) said 4,413 were caught between March 1 and April 15 alone.

Rail operations director Mohammed Yousef Al Mudharreb said: “The step is part of the RTA’s endeavours to maintain the privacy and comfort of women and children”.

The RTA expanded the compartments by doubling the 15 seats and 70 standing spaces in February.

But some female commuters said despite the fine they are still seeing men on a daily basis.
