Work on the proposed railway project in Qatar will be completed in 10 years, earlier than the original schedule, as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022.
A senior official of Qatari Diar said that the proposed metro railway will link Lusail city with other parts of the city, The Peninsula reported on Friday.
Lusail city is located on the east coast of Qatar, approximately 15 kilometres north of the city centre of Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The city is comprised of 37 square kilometers of waterfront land that is master planned into 19 integrated and diverse mixed-use districts.
The district will include residences, offices and hotels, as well as three marinas and an offshore island with 500 villas.
Abdul Latheef Mohammed Al Nuaimi, head of administrative affairs at Qatari Diar also told The Peninsula that the existing Doha International Airport will be demolished, once the new international airport becomes operational next year, to give way to a new urban project in its location.
Qatari Diar is responsible for executing the railway project along with many other major projects planned as part of the Qatar Master Plan, the daily added.
The metro is part of Qatar’s $42.9bn railway project that will also include an east coast link, a high-speed link, a freight link and a light rail system. The railway will serve suburb of Doha and developments such as Lusail, Education city and West Bay.
