Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has constructed six truck stops along three major highways in the UAE.

The rest stops, which comprise 160 parking spaces in total, have been built along Emirates Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and the Hatta-Oman Road.

The work forms part of the RTA’s strategy to ease truck volumes on the UAE’s major roads, and policy makers plan to build six additional stops during the course of 2015.

“The RTA is keen on implementing the objectives of the strategic plan of traffic safety on main roads, and in 2015, it completed the construction of six highway rest stops for trucks with a total capacity of 160 parking slots,” explained RTA Traffic and Roads Agency chief executive officer, Engineer Maitha bin Udai.

“According to the plan, six new rest stops will be constructed in 2015, and work is currently underway in selecting appropriate locations for these stops,” she added.

The sites have been selected in accordance with a range of criteria, including their proximity to both major roads and amenities.

“They have to be on highways and near service centres (petrol stations) to ensure the availability of basic and handy services to drivers,” commented Udai. More info
